CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN

This month we welcomed a new WI into the Federation. Hagworthingham & District WI will be meeting on the first Tuesday of the month at the beautiful setting of Stockwith Mill. We wish them every success – and I know you will all give them your support.

Talking of support, that is the main role of our WI advisers.
Sadly, two of our advisers will be stepping down this year – Sue Bradley and Kathy Crust. Both have volunteered a vast amount of time to this important role within the federation and their assistance has been invaluable. We thank them both for everything they have done.

Next March we will be saying goodbye to another important member of the federation team – our federation secretary Sue Bain, who has decided to retire (needless to say, it is early retirement!). Therefore, we will shortly be advertising for a new federation secretary.

We are grateful to Sue for giving us such long notice on her decision and are pleased to say she will be with us for our annual meeting in Skegness on March 29, when the new term of office for federation trustees will also begin.

As always, take care

CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN:

What a difference a few hours can make.

On Thursday September 8, we enjoyed the first of this year’s ‘Ladies of Lincolnshire’ lunches, at The Dower House in Woodhall Spa. Great food and a fantastic speaker in Nikki Cook, CEO of LIVES.

However, just hours later we were in mourning for our Queen and fellow WI member.

The picture above (courtesy of NFWI) shows The Queen at the 2015 WI Centenary meeting in the Royal Albert Hall and those who were there will have fond memories of that occasion. Many will have personal memories too — a chance meeting, a garden party invitation or just a view from afar of our longest reigning monarch.

Our national chairman Ann Jones has represented the WI well over the past days in her many interviews. In a statement issued by Ann, she describes the Queen as “the ultimate inspiring woman”.

She continued:

“Loyal, courageous, generous of spirit and a true leader of our times. She has been the monarch that has defined our living memories and shaped our experiences. Her life has touched each of us and people around the world.

“Outside of her Royal duties, she was a long-serving and passionate WI member, absolutely epitomizing our values and ethos as an organisation. Hers was a life of service and we remain incredibly proud to have called her one of our own.

“We have fond memories which we will treasure …… we give thanks for the life of Her Majesty the Queen and our condolences to her family at this sad time.”

CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN:

Scorchio! That is the only word to describe the recent trip to Stamford and Tolethorpe Outdoor Theatre – but what a great visit it was. Thankfully, our coach had lovely air conditioning – and when we were in the theatre, there was some relief when all the women wafted their fans at the same time to create a very welcome breeze!! The ice cream was very welcome during the interval too.

The play, Agatha Christie’s Spiders Web, was excellent, with some clever use of modern music ‘time-warped’ to give a period feel.

For anyone who hasn’t been to Tolethorpe – and I have to say it was my first visit – it is quite an experience, and one to take up if you get the chance.

It wasn’t quite the outdoor theatre I was expecting – if you have been to the Minack Theatre in Cornwall you will know what I mean but it is well worth a visit, and combined with a visit to Stamford as we did, a great day out.

The following day, I was lucky enough to enjoy a cream tea with my fellow Rolling Scones WI members aboard the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway. This is another gem run completely by volunteers. Sadly, due to the risk of fire in the parched fields by sparks from the steam engines, it was a diesel engine run, but we were able to get up close to the magnificent steam engines in the engine sheds – and were able to climb up into the driver’s cab.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming Ladies of Lincolnshire Lunches, which have again proved very popular, and at the many events organised through to the end of the year.

Next year’s programme is also shaping up nicely, thanks to the work of the events committee. Don’t forget, if you have an idea for an outing, workshop or other event, please let them know.

Talking of letting people know, please let your secretary and MCS rep know if you change your email address, phone number etc. And if you are the MCS rep, please make sure information is complete and up to date, There have been a number of occasions where we have needed to contact a member and gone into the MCS record only to find there is no telephone number or email address.

The information on the MCS is only used to administer your WI membership and help you get the most out of being a WI member, so please take time to make sure all the information is there.

As September includes ‘WI Day’ it is the perfect time for MCS reps to make sure all members are entered on their listing. For example, there are currently 87 members listed in the system as ‘inactive’ and we know that is not the case for some of those members.

If you have any issues, please contact the office.

Well, that is all for now.

Take care as always. Dianne

August

CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN:

I hope you are keeping well in this extreme heat we have been experiencing. You can always really on our weather to be a talking point can’t you?

It was also very hot at this year’s Lincolnshire Show and I add my thanks to our catering officer Janet and to everyone who battled on and helped at the event – it was very much appreciated.

Our show marquee looked fantastic too, with some amazing entries – which could be seen by the high marks awarded.

Congratulations to all the winners – and to everyone who entered. What talented members we have.

Talking of talent….. I was delighted to take part in the ‘Painting on Pottery’ workshop at WI House recently, led by Heighington member Helen Keyworth.

It was a lovely way to spend a Saturday – having a go at something different in a relaxed
and fun atmosphere, with a small group of fellow members and guests.

The results weren’t bad either, as you can see from the picture.

The 2023 programme of events and activities is being finalised now, so if there is something you would like to try or a workshop you would be willing to lead – just let us
know.

Well, that is all for now.

Take care as always. Dianne

July

CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN:

As I write this, we have just finished at Carrington rally and are now looking to the
Lincolnshire Show – having also had the National meeting in Liverpool in between.

Of course, by the time you read this, the Lincolnshire Show will be over—and I am sure it will have been fantastic.

In next month’s WI News, we will be sharing the results, so look out for that.

I think everyone agrees it is wonderful to be able to take part in these occasions once again and thanks go to all those who have contributed too.

There are a lot of events coming up – and the events committee is well on with its planning for 2023. Remember, if you have any ideas for activities or outings, please let them know. Better still, why not become part of the events team. Just contact the office to find out more.

Many WIs over the past month have been celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. My own WI at Ludford marked the occasion with a talk on Jubilees through the ages, followed by sharing a sumptuous cake created by president Caroline Feit.

Lots more of your celebratory pictures can be found on page 5.

Until next time, take care. Dianne
