Chairman’s chat

Hello everyone

I hope those who attended the Federation Annual meeting in Skegness enjoyed the day.
We have had some very positive feedback on both the presentations in the morning for all things federation and, of course, our taste of ‘Strictly’ in the afternoon with Gerald Schwanzer.
For three people – Linda Coatsworth, Hlary Rainer and our federation secretary Jess – it was an extra special
afternoon, as they got the opportunity to model some of the costumes – and didn’t they look amazing.
It was a special afternoon too for a number of members, who collected certificates of membership milestones.
This year, for the first time, 25 years or more membership was recognised, along with 50, 60 and 70 years.
Receiving certificates were:

50 years membership – Julie Griffiths (East Barkwith); Ann Byrne (Rolling Scones); Sandra Goldsbrough, Jennifer Smith, Barbara Vickers (South Elkington); Doreen Holmes (Spa Afternoon); Gwen Bingham (Upton cum Kexby); Margaret Kane (Wragby).
60 years membership – Marian Libell (North Somercotes); Kathleen Spencer (Tetney).
70 years membership – Pamela Vessey (Burgh le Marsh).
There were also some of our WIs celebrating significant milestones: Upton cum Kexby 60 years; Nettleham 75 years; North Somercotes 75 years; Wragby 80 years; Revesby & Mareham 90 years; Burgh le Marsh 100 years.
Congratulations to all and thank you for your loyalty to the WI.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make the annual meeting such a success.
All the trustees, who prepared presentations for the event; members of EAT for many the events area and selling the paper quizzes; Horncastle WI for running the raffle: Owmby & District for running the Gifts to Go stall; and Angela Jacklin for acting as official photographer – and you can see the pictures over the next few pages.
Thank you also to the team at The Embassy Theatre for their help, with the theatre manager even stepping in to play Jerusalem and the National Anthem for us.
Last, but by no means least, thank you to all the members who came along. I hope you felt it was a worthwhile day and gave you lots of information about your federation, as well as some entertainment.
Take care as always
Dianne

Chairman’s Column

Hello everyone
What a busy month it has been. I have had a great time visiting a number of WIs, both with my WI Adviser hat on and as Federation Chairman. It never ceases to amaze me how
different each WI is, but one thing remains the same – a place where women can come
together and enjoy friendship in a safe environment.
Of course, the WI is based on learning and that learning comes in many forms. At Binbrook & District WI hey have linked the traditional with new, more modern crafting skills to create a banner to use both at meetings and when out and about at community events to help showcase the WI.
Its creation was led by talented member Linda Kiddell, who has been sharing her multi-media crafting skills with members and non-members through a series of workshops.
Linda has kindly said if there are any other WIs who are interested in making a banner and who need some assistance, she would be pleased to give them a bit of guidance.
By the time you read this, we will have had our Federation Annual meeting at Skegness, and I want to say how privileged I feel to have my fellow trustees put their faith in me once again to serve another year as chairman.
However, it really is a team effort; while each trustee takes on a specific role, it is only by
working together we can look at moving the federation forward.
There is a great programme of events planned by EAT for the next 12 months, including the amazing Red Dress project next March – a real coup to be able to bring this to Horncastle.
We will again be at Carrington, the Lincolnshire Show and Spilsby Show, an opportunity to
volunteer time at events or baking in advance.
We will also be continuing with our occasional coffee mornings at WI house too – an opportunity to come together in a social gathering.
We will be running a number of raffles and tombolas through the year and any donations will be gratefully received at WI House – thank you in advance.
Take care as always

Chairman’s column

Hello everyone
Well, what do you think?
I hope you will agree this edition of the WI News is jam-packed with events and activities to get involved with over the coming year – and even in to 2025.
Thanks go to all the members of EAT (Events and Activities Team) for creating such a varied and interesting programme. It is impossible to get something that will appeal to everyone, but I hope there is at least one thing that catches your eye. However, if you think there is something you would like to try or somewhere you would like to go that isn’t listed, let the team know and it may be possible to arrange it.
You will see on page 2 there are some events that have very early deadlines for bookings. This is because tickets need to be purchased well in advance. My advice, though, is always to get your booking in as soon as you see something you would like to do, so you don’t miss out. However, please remember, your place isn’t secure until payment is made.
Information on how to book is given on page 8. We request bank transfers for payments if at all possible as this saves on bank charges and means there is more money for our federation to work with.
I look forward to seeing you at events soon.
Take care as always.

As you will see from this month’s WI News, there is a lot going on to get 2024 off to a cracking start – but there is a lot more to come.

Full details of the whole year’s programme will be available at the Federation Meeting in Skegness on March 27 and in future WI News editions – so keep an eye out.
I hope to see many of you at Skegness in March and at other events coming up.

December / January newsletter

Chairman’s Column

Hello everyone
Well what a time it has been since the last newsletter.
As you will know, thanks to Storm Babet and an issue with Horncastle’s flood defence system, WI House, like many businesses and homes in the town, was the victim of unprecedented flooding.
Initially we thought the damage was confined to the sheds, rendering our catering fridges unusable. We were grateful to the provision of skips by the district council which enabled us to dispose of them.
The clean up began and thanks go to the trustees and other members who gave up their time to help with that.
Gill Pursey did a great job with the carpet as you can see from the picture. However, as time moved on, we realised the carpet tiles would need to be lifted otherwise the floor would not dry completely.
As trustees, one of the duties is to maintain WI House and there is a rolling programme of work to do this. As the tiles were up and the skips were available, we decided to bite the bullet, get rid of the carpeting completely and take on a major project for 2024. Unfortunately, our insurance policy did not cover us for flooding from the river, only for water ingress through the roof, something we are looking into currently. We already had some money set aside for maintenance, but more is needed to undertake such a project. Therefore, we have applied to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund for a grant to replace the flooring, redecorate, purchase new fridges and also repair the car park wall – so fingers crossed. It will take some time to be completed, but WI House will be refreshed and more user-friendly as a result. We hope you all agree.
Meanwhile, WI house is fully operational – although the floor is a bit sticky.
So as we come to the end of the year, we can certainly say 2023 has been eventful and we can look forward to 2024 with optimism, as well as with a packed programme of events and opportunities.
Best wishes for the festive season to all and good health for the New Year.
Take care as always
Dianne
