CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN:

It has been lovely to get out and about to more events and meet up with so many of you.
Author Joy Wood is proving to be a popular speaker at meetings and I can see why, having been welcomed to Faldingworth & District WI’s open meeting in their new, spacious venue at Toft Newton Village Hall.

I was fortunate to be invited along to Sturton by Stow’s open evening too. A lot of work had gone into displays to show potential new members what the WI was all about – and it paid off. They had 10 visitors and most confirmed they would be joining. Since then, there has been more contact with those who couldn’t attend, so it looks like their next meeting will be welcoming new members too.

The neighbouring village of Stow was the venue for the second Ladies of Lincolnshire Lunch, where the Cross Keys staff were very welcoming – and the food was good too. Speaker Sue Fortune told of the work of the Lincolnshire Community Foundation – a charity that administers a number of funds. A WI in the Lincolnshire Humber Federation has been a recent recipient of a grant – for their community allotment.

My most recent ‘outing’ was to an afternoon tea with Manby & Grimoldby WI to celebrate their centenary. Fellow trustees Jean Burgess and Paula Burrett, and our federation secretary Sue, along with representa-tives from neighbouring WIs were treated to a fantastic spread – along with some traditional county poems and songs from members of the Far Welter’d! East Lincolnshire Dialect Society. Congratulations to all at Manby & Grimoldby on reaching 100 and hosting such a well organised event.

CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN:

What a lovely afternoon I had on September 8th. My first Ladies of Lincolnshire Lunch. Thank you to those who came along for their company – it was great to get together wasn’t it?

Our speaker, Inspector Fran Harrod, the neighbourhood policing inspector for Boston, spoke about domestic abuse – a topic that was highlighted further during the lockdowns.

It may seem a ‘heavy’ subject for a lunch meeting, but in my opinion it was delivered well and there was some useful information shared.

Fran said 2.3 million cases of domestic abuse are reported each year, although the true picture is likely to be much higher.

During lockdown, in Lincolnshire reports to police remained about the same, but other agencies saw a 49% rise.

Fran’s message was ‘help is out there’ whether through the police or charities, such as EDAN Lincs. Details below:

I am looking forward to meeting more of you at the next two lunches.

Sadly, the planned afternoon tea event to celebrate the centenary of Margaret Wintringham’s election to parliament is not going ahead as there was insufficient take up.

This is the opportunity to remind everyone it is important to book onto events and activities as soon as you can please. A number of recent events have sold out very quickly and others are dependent on getting definite numbers by a certain date. You can do this as an individual – you do not have to wait for your meeting and go through your WI secretary.

Finally, thank you to everyone who filled in their proxy voting form for our general meeting to agree the new Articles of Associations for the federation. The meeting was quick – just 5 minutes all in.

Take care. Dianne

CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN:

I know I am not the only one to say where has the time gone? I am sure the rest of the year will go just as quickly, especially with everything planned within your own Wis and at federation level.

Once again, our Ladies of Lincolnshire Lunches have proved very popular, with the Burgh le Marsh date selling out very early on. This gives me the perfect opportunity to remind you to book your place on any event you would like to attend as soon as possible so you are not disappointed.

You can book as an individual and do not have to wait for your WI secretary to do it – but please remember, your place won’t be confirmed until payment is made.

How is the knitting going? Thank you to everyone who has already pledged to take part in the ‘Viking Way’ knit/crochet. Just to remind you, there is no definitive scarf, just do your own thing – any wool or length – but remember to log your scarf length on the dedicated email address: lincsvikingscarf@gmail.com

We have had quite a number logging their lengths, but the biggest knit to date is Pam Stratford from Tetford & District WI who has single-handedly covered a distance of over 41-feet.

Now, an apology. The WI News has recently featured a flower quiz. This was a ‘recycled’ item from sometime ago and one of the questions and its answer should not have been included. It slipped through the proofing net and we apologise for any offence caused.

Finally, please take note of the general meeting notice at the bottom of this page. This is a formality for the adoption of the revised federation constitution, as you will remember was done via Zoom for the WI and National constitutions back in March.

Take care. Dianne

CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN:

Well, what a roller-coaster month July was. With the easing of Covid restrictions being delayed and the weather not being able to decide what season we were in – no change there then.

It has been great to see many members managing to have ‘al-fresco’ gatherings. Now, hopefully, every-one can start to plan for meetings once again, although there may be some who are reluctant to meet in larger groups and we all need to be mindful of that.

The Federation Events committee has been working hard on plans for activities and outings, both for this autumn and throughout 2022. It is hoped many of the 2020 planned events that had to be cancelled can be revived next year, so keep an eye in the WI News, on the Federation Facebook page and at the regular mailings sent out to secretaries so you don’t miss anything.

If you have any ideas for events, then please get in touch with the office – and if you would like to help create forthcoming programmes why not speak to our federation secretary Sue Bain or events chairman Paula Burrett about being part of the organising committee.

Our tag line is WI Inspiring Women and we will be celebrating one such inspiring woman in September.

On Saturday September 25, the Federation will be marking the 100th anniversary of Margaret Wintringham becoming the first British-born woman to take a seat in the House of Commons – and of course, she was a WI member in our own Federation.

It was on September 22, 1921 when Mrs Wintringham became MP for Louth – so it is fitting that this event will be held in Louth Town Hall, and what better way to celebrate this remarkable achievement than with an afternoon tea? The event will run from 2pm to 4pm, with doors opening at 1.30pm. The cost is £15 per ticket and bookings are being taken now.

I hope to see some of you there or at the upcoming Ladies of Lincolnshire Lunch events.

Take care. Dianne.
